Beschreibung
'Pelican' is an interesting ship, and certainly an interesting rig! Known as a 'Poleacre-rig,' this was commonly used by not only 18th and 19th century Mediterranean merchantmen, but also the infamous Barbary Corsairs from time to time, because of its ease of use, and windward performance.... The combination of fore and aft sails on the fore and mizzen masts, with square sails on the mainmast make 'Pelican not only fast off the wind, but can point within forty degrees of the eye of the wind as well; an unheard-of performance for a standard 'square-rigger!'

'Pelican' was completely refurbished, reconstructed and re-rigged over a period of 12 years and completed in 2007, and her unusual rig was determined and proved after a series of model tests in open water, completely verifying the ideas and hopes of her designers, Phillip Goode and Graham Nielson. The original plans for this ship were for a circumnavigation as part of the various Millenium celebrations, but delays and funding issues prevented the planned trip, although subsequent to her completeion in 2007, 'Pelican' has sailed from the UK to Spain and on to the Caribbean.

Certified for world-wide operation for up to 40 people (MCA Code of Practice for the Safety of Large Commercial Sailing Vessels over 24M With Bureau Veritas attestation), ordinarily 'Pelican' sails with 28 passengers and six to eight permanent crew in fine style, and an examination of the photos and full specifications will give you a better idea of this outstanding Tall Ship! More photos of the interior are due from the owners, and will be posted as soon as available.

Räumlichkeiten
While there is berthing capacity for up to 40 people in approved accommodation, ordinarily 'Pelican' carries 28 passengers and 6-8 crew. Passengers berth in seven ensuite cabins. These cabins include four cabins that are convertible with either a double with settee, or four berths, or any combination in between. There is one cabin with four permanent 'over and under' berths, one double cabin with settee only, and one masters cabin. The crew is berthed in a variety of single, twin, and/or three-berth cabins, all with washbasins and close access to shower/bath and toilet facilities.

The saloon is located right aft, and includes a bar and library with seating for 10, plus five large opening bronze portlights for ventilation.

The Mess/Dining Area can easily seat 20, with food service from the adjacent galley, and can double as a classroom or conference area as well.

Pantry
'Pelican' has a professional commercial galley with and electric four-burner range and oven, plus a large combination oven as well. there are two refrigerators, three deep SS sinks, and a washbasin as well. The galley also has its own ventilation system, as well as five opening bronze portlights. In the forward part of the ship there is a provisions room with a 9 square meter walking freezer and an additional large fridge plus ample space for dry goods and additional space in a lockable lower storeroom as well.

Elektronik
There are two primary helm positions, both with duplicated instruments. The aft helm is most commonly used, as it provides the best field of view and features a traditional wheel that is hydraulically assisted. Instruments include a Furuno M1832 combination Radar and GPS chartplotter, a GPS compass as well as a traditional compass and binnacle, a NAVTEX NX-700 receiver for navidational warnings and weather information, and an AIG interrogator for vessel identificatio. There is also an INMARSAT C satellite communications systeman SSB radio in both HF and MF bandwidths, plus a VHF radio system with 30 mile range for coastal communications, plus two hand-held VHF radios as well.

The secondary helm position is in the wheelhouse, with full weather protection for rough seas and bad weather, and includes all instruments available at the primary helm position plus an autopilot, and there is also an emergency tiller system that can be installed in five minutes if necessary.

Elektrisch
1 x 57 KW G&M turbo-charged Sierra 63 diesel generator, 1 x 43 KW naturally aspirated G&M 48 diesel generator, 240V/110V AC main lighting and electrical system with emergency lighting in all passageways, 24V DC systemfor bridge, engine room, etc. 410V shorepower system. 2 x Seafresh watermakers for 3 or 6 tonnes of freshwater per day, hot water provided by 2 x heat exchangers working off the generators. Ventilation AC system forced ventilation with air treatment and 3-compressor chiller plant

Deck/Construction
Hull is made of 10mm steel plates joggle lap-rivetted below the main deck and doubled at the turn of the bilge in the mid-section. Hull above the main deck is of 6mm steel plate (including bulwarks). Decks are of 6mm steel plate with Soroya wood planking above.

Ground Tackle: 1 x 1100 Lbs bronze close-stowing anchor, 1 x 760 KG steel Danforth anchor. Hydraulically driven SS anchor windlass with main engine power take-off and galvanized steel warping drums.

Sails/Spars: Outer jib, jib, forestaysail, gaff foresail, main staysail, course, topsail, topgallant, and royal square sails, mizzen topsail and spanker. All sails in 'Egyptian cotton' colored heavy Terylene by James Lawrence of Brightlingsea, UK. Pole masts in galvanized steel, all yards, with the exception of the royal yard are in aluminum, with the lowering royal yard in wood. Mainsail yards can be braced to within 20 degrees of the centerline, thus significantly enhancing windward performance.

Rigging: All shrouds and stays in 7 x 7 galvanized wire with new bottle-screws, bowsprit furniture and bobstay chain are in bronze. Running rigging is in either polypropylene, or Dyneema.

Safety: 4 x 25 man liferafts (hired from Norwest Marine), 40 x immersion suits, 1 x Jon buoy for individual man-overboard, high-sapeed 5.4m Avon Searider RIB rescue boat with 65HP mariner OB launched by deck crane from the forward poop deck, life jackets with lights and whistles for the maximum complement plus 10%. Firefighting equipment includes a fire detection alarm system, with multiple fire extinguishers located throughout the ship, and the emergency diesel pump can be used to power firehoses the length of the ship.

History/Additional
'Pelican' was originally built in 1948 in Le Havre, France, as a double-beam Arctic trawler, serving as such until 1967. The ship was then operated in Norway as a coaster until 1995, when the ship began rebuilding as a Sail Training Ship, with completion in 2007. 'Pelican is certified for world-wide ocean charter, and has sailed to Spain, the Caribbean and back.

Additional: 5m inflatable diveboat/tender w/ 35 HP Mariner OB, and skids/space for an additional 4m workboat, if required. 'Pelican' is stability tested to 120 degrees plus, and is rated as a 'single compartment ship,' meaning she will survive with one compartment completely flooded, and with eight watertight subdivisions, this requirement is exceeded. thestandard bilge suction line deals with six of thes subdivisions, and there is not only a duplicate system in place, but the diesel-driven emergency pump can reach all compartments as well.

Altogether, 'Pelican' is a well thought-out, and wellfound tall ship, ready for any charter fleet anywhere in the world. Highly recommended!
