Beschreibung

Unquestionably the finest example of a 19th-century coasting schooner afloat today, the GRACE BAILEY was built in 1882 by Oliver Perry Smith at his boatyard on the Patchogue River, New York.

From the moment you step aboard her broad wooden decks, the GRACE BAILY’s rich history comes to life: this is the grand ship that sailed to the West Indies in the Fruit Trade, carried granite to New York City for Grand Central Station, and carried lumber, coal, oysters, and other commodities up and down the eastern seaboard.

The GRACE BAILY came to Maine in 1920 and has continued to earn her keep carrying cargo throughout New England ever since.  A familiar sight in local ports for more than 100 years, she is listed on the register of National Landmarks and dear to the hearts of many.

In 1939 Frank Swift brought the GRACE BAILEY to Camden where she exchanged her cargo of lumber and granite for passengers in joining his original windjammer fleet offering weeklong overnight trips - a tradition she continues to this day.  The GRACE BAILEY is certified to carry 34 overnight passengers and 54 passengers on daysails with a captain and two deckhands.

Over the years every effort has been made to preserve her historic integrity while offering maximum comfort to guests. The original cargo area was divided into twelve private double cabins with either a double bed or two single bunks; all have full standing headroom and a window or porthole for light and ventilation. There are also two private cabins, each with a single bed, and two Pullman berths. Each of GRACE BAILEY’s four passenger compartments feature their own head, and there is a freshwater hot water shower.

One of the GRACE BAILEY’s most unique and special features is her restored aft cabin, which would have been the only finished area on the vessel when she carried cargo going back to 1882. With its richly finished hand-carved paneling, this area remains almost entirely original to this day, serving as the guest’s lounge, library, music room (complete with piano), and private owners’ quarters.

The owner’s quarters contain a private cabin with double bed, kids cabin with two single berths, and a private head - Perfect for a family business.   And forward of the mast the crew will appreciate some privacy as well, in their private forecastle with four bunks.

The GRACE BAILEY’s spacious galley is the perfect place for relaxing and communal gathering.  Equipped with a vintage Shipmate wood burning stove, ample ice box space, and comfortable seating for all guests and crew.

The GRACE BAILY underwent a full rebuild/restoration in 1990 and is Coast Guard inspected annually.  She is 123 feet overall, 81 feet on deck, and with her shoal-draft of just 6’ can explore secluded ports inaccessible to deeper vessels.  But sailing to windward lower the centerboard down to its impressive depth of 16’ and you’ll be amazed by some cutting-edge performance, even by today’s standards.

The GRACE BAILEY well known for her exceptional speed.  A many times winner of Penobscot Bay’s Great Schooner Race, her sails were all new in 2021, and her Coast Guard stability letter would allow future owners to even add topsails and a flying jib – a rig with which she was originally built.

The GRACE BAILEY will convey with a complete inventory of galley wares, linens, safety equipment, and everything necessary for continuing to ply the windjammer trade.  Her auxiliary propulsion is provided by a 14' cold-molded yawl boat with 75hp diesel engine (rebuilt in 2021).  Also included is a 14' rowing Whitehall in side-davits.

The Schooner GRACE BAILEY represents several unique opportunities for her next owner:  She could be purchased and engaged independently in the lucrative Maine windjammer trade, she could be purchased in tandem with her sister ship MERCANTILE and continue operating from her current berth in Camden, ME; or she could embark on any number of new ventures.  One thing for sure, is whether carrying passengers for hire or some other cargo, The GRACE BAILEY promises to continue earning her keep for many years to come.

Offers are strongly encouraged, and considerable incentives are available for a buyer who keeps the GRACE BAILEY and MERCANTILE together in Camden – thus preserving the longest running and original Maine Windjammer Cruises with business dating back to the 1930’s.
