"Nothing- absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats" I'm convinced Rat was talking about wooden boats at the time. Ralph Wiley Designed and built when the concept of a fiberglass boats was abhorrent. Catering to only the people who wanted a high end quality boat, this small boat yard in Oxford, Md. built wood boats to serve the specific needs of the buyers. "Surf Bird" is a fast sailing centerboard Ketch that has made several trips up and down the East Coast and is in excellent condition ready to do many more. Comfortable sailing and accomodations for comfortable cruises make "Surf Bird" the right boat for you.
IT IS A PROJECT BOAT! This unique boat is could easily outlive all of us, but there are some areas on the boat which will need to be restored/replaced/refurbished. The 2 most serious areas needing to be addressed are the deck and the centerboard trunk. There are a lot of other less serious concerns that need your personal tastes to choose such as interior cushions and whether or not you want to keep the composting head. Contact me or your broker and lets talk about whether you want to take on the work needed.
The boat is currently in the water at Cutts and Case in Oxford, Md. under her winter cover with the masts out (stored inside for the winter)
More pictures will come as the opportunity arises and Surfbird will be commissioned in early spring.
Contact the listing broker or your broker fi you would like to set up a time to come and see the boat.
Information about Surfbird
Surfbird was originally built for an exclusive owner who was tall, wanted a fast sailing cruising boat, a shallow draft, he wanted separate quarters aft of the cockpit and electric winches to trim the big sails. There were also many other issues that were built into the Ralph Wiley design that were well thought out by both the original owner and the designer such as easy access to the engine and systems on the boat. Originally built to Wiley's demanding standards, the boat was later completely up dated with the Patented Cutts System (using Kevlar cording and epoxy resin) to strengthen and waterproof the exterior hull.
The engine also was replaced with a newer Yanmar 4JH4-TE
Every year the masts were taken out for the winter, inspected and cared for by the skilled craftsmen at Cutts and Case. All systems were winterized and commissioned yearly for the family trips during the season.
Unfortunately the owners have aged out and it's now time for new owners to take advantage of the opportunities this wonderful boat offers. It's not the perfect boat for everyone, but if you love wooden boats and what they have to offer Surf Bird may be the right boat for you.
