Owner's Detailed Description

"Welcome aboard Kallima. welcome aboard our home.

When I bought this boat, I was of the view it was the best possible compromise between comfort and performance under sail. Now, three years later I'm in no doubt the Catana 47 really is the best possible compromise for Bluewater sailing. It is ideally suited for a couple or a family.

On the starboard stern attaches a Watt & Sea long shaft Hydro Generator. This can produce up to 600 watts and his ideal when sailing speeds reach or exceed 7 knots. It is easy to attach and remove. It is plugged into a nearby socket and can be switched on and off at the starboard helm station if necessary. This can produce power all day, and when the sun disappears over the horizon it continues to charge the batteries all night too. 

The portside stern is an ideal bathing platform. The substantial bathing ladder fits neatly into its own locker when not in use. There is a shower with a hot and cold mixer the tap. Shower head and hoses are all new.

Kallima is powered by two Volvo D2 55HP engines. These require little explanation, being one of the most tried and tested of all marine engines. Each engine has done less than 2000 hours, and they have been meticulously maintained. Kallima cruises very comfortably at 7 knots on two engines in most conditions. When the sea us calm, she cruises well with only one engine at 6 knots. The engine rooms are relatively spacious which makes servicing easy, and the engines are remarkably quiet as the engine rooms are well insulated. It is a Catana requirement that every seven years the saildrive seals are replaced. These were both new in July last year.

The port engine locker also houses a Paguro 4 kva 3.5 kW diesel power generator. This was new in 2021 and has done less than 200 hours. It is operated from the chart table and includes the useful electronic display. The generator is almost inaudible when in use, and even when powering the power driving compressor is only working at 80% of its capacity.

The starboard engine room also houses a diving compressor and the watermaker. The Bauere Junior II diving compressor was new in 2021, and only has 10 hours use. If required, it can charge two diving cylinders simultaneously. The diving compressor is electric and so is relatively quiet when in use. It is normally powered by the generator but can also be connected directly to shore power. It is easy to remove and take a shore if necessary. There are numerous spare filters on board. 

The Dessalator Duo water maker was new in 2021 and has only done 146 hours. It can produce 100 litres of drinking water an hour, and has the option of a 12 Volt or 220 Volt motor, hence its name Duo. There are two control panels: one is in the cockpit and the other alongside the chart table. There is a really neat feature allowing the watermaker to turn off automatically after a predetermined amount of time. Drinking water can be dispensed into the galley sink, or either the port or starboard water tanks. The watermaker is fully automatic and comes with plenty of spare filters.

Kallima is happiest when she's under sail. The design of the Catana 47 is such that one or two people can manage the rig effortlessly from within the cockpit area. For the most part when the wind was about the beam, we would make use solely of the head sails. The 53 square metres Genoa is in great condition, and there is now a brand new and unused 83 square metre Code Zero. There is also a great 120 square metre asymmetric spinnaker with sock, although generally we use the Code Zero in light winds more than the spinnaker. Both the Genoa and Code Zero are easily reefed from the cockpit. There is also a 29 square metre staysail and five square metre storm jib. On a reach, or when the wind was forwarded to beam the 86 square metre main sail came into its own. This is contained within a brand new lazy pack made by North Sails.

There are three Harken 50 electric winches, and three additional manual harken winches in the cockpit with a further winch on the mast. There are new halyards throughout and almost all the sheets are new too.

The cockpit is where we spend most of our time. At sea it provides a safe, dry and functional area. At anchor it offers great comfort and a communal space to socialise. There is all around protection from the wind, rain and sunshine. There is a double track system to support the waterproof curtains and another to support the sun protection canvas. All the seats have cushions and the table can sit eight people comfortably. There is ample LED dimmable lighting.

Kallima is blessed with a huge amount of locker space. Much of this is in the cockpit area. There are two large lockers in the floor and a deep locker under the main seating area. We have always used one of the floor lockers for buckets, cleaning materials, and for storing the Hydro Generator safely. And the other floor locker for the spare anchors, diving weights, electrical cable,s BBQ and spear guns. The deep locker under the seat is for the gas bottles and is also an ideal place to store diving cylinders. Kallima comes with two adult diving cylinders, 12 litres each, and a child’s diving cylinder, approximately 8 litre. There is ample space for more cylinders, or alternative storage if required.

The deck space is huge provides a wonderfully large stable platform, and is an ideal place particularly a tanker to spend time and relax. The net trampolines are where everyone chooses to lie in the sun. These were new in 2021. The entire trampoline area and foredeck space can be covered with an awning which was custom made in 2021, and in the intense tropical sun provides a welcome area of shade. 

There is a huge locker on the forward port and starboard side. We use the forward starboard locker exclusively for storing sails, the forward awning, and occasionally for carrying additional freshwater containers. 

The portside forward locker we reserve for water sports equipment and is also home for the emergency tiller.  

There are three lockers just forwarded the coach house. Starboard and portside lockers are very deep. 

The central locker is reserved for the windlass, and it is also where the starboard and port fuel tanks are filled.

The starboard locker is used for the principal anchor chain and is a fuel an oil locker. 

The port locker is used for storing fenders spare rope dock lines and the secondary anchor and its associated rope and chain.  It also contains a seawater hose fitting, although with the abundance of freshwater aboard Kallima this is rarely used.

All hatches on the deck and coach house had been removed, fully serviced and re-sealed this year.

On the forward starboard deck is access to the holding tank, should there be a requirement to pump out the contents. 

The port and starboard freshwater tanks are accessed from the port and starboard transoms respectively.

A Lofran 1700watt windlass with Capstan has proved to be a trouble free workhorse. It could be controlled from a pendant in the windlass locker, or from the helm station. In February this year the windlass was removed inspected and fully serviced.

The main anchor is a 35 kilogrammes Spade. It has recently been shot-blasted and re-galvanised. This is attached by means of a swivel to 2.5 metres of 14 millimetre galvanised chain, which in turn is attached by another swivel to 100 metres of 10 millimetre galvanised chain. 

There is a secondary 25 kilogramme Cobra anchor in the forward port locker adjacent to the windlass. This comes with 6.5 metres of 10 millimetre galvanised chain and 50 metres of 16 millimetre rope. 

In the cockpit deck locker is stored 25 kilogramme Delta anchor and a 7.5 kilogramme fortress anchor. These are accompanied with 10 millimetre galvanised chain and 50 metres of rope. 

The 3DC Rover is the perfect tender to Kallima. The 25HP Yamaha Enduro was new in 2021, and although somewhat oversized it provides a useful solution for water sports, or when the dinghy is heavily loaded with diving equipment, provisions, or heavy adults.

It is easily suspended from the two substantial Davits.

On ocean passages the outboard is stored in the forward locker. 

The outboard was inspected and fully serviced in February 2023. 

The tender has a relatively large anchor with chain and approximately 20 metres of rope, ideal for holding in adverse conditions."
