Clapotis (lapping waves in French) is a 2015 Lagoon 450F located in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. The boat is USCG registered and held in a single asset LLC providing tax advantages for any buyer planning to locate the boat back to the USA. San Carlos is on the Mexican mainland side of the Sea of Cortez roughly 300 miles due south of Tucson, Arizona. For those not familiar with the area, the SOC is one of the best cruising areas on the planet, especially if you are used to crowded anchorages and seaways. There is still little pressure here as compared to other popular cruising areas.
Our primary reason for selling is a family health issue limiting our future use of the boat. Originally she was the personal vessel for the Lagoon dealer on the USA West Coast, Naos Yachts. The owner used the boat for cruises with family to Mexico for winters and back to California for summers. She has never been chartered. We purchased her in 2019 in Marina del Rey, CA and brought her to our home port, San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico where we have a home.
While the boat was set up for crossing oceans, we have not used her as such. Our adventures have been limited to the 1,200 NM trip from California to San Carlos at time of purchase and since then cruising the Sea of Cortez, primarily the East cape of Baja. We have not lived on the boat. During our ownership she has been used for family cruises to the Baja California peninsula a half dozen or so times per year.
She has a good sail package (5 sails) and all dyneema lines. She sails very well and is in my opinion quite fast, but we sail very conservatively with one reef in the main at 15 knots. Under power she is incredibly efficient. If the wind does not favor our direction of travel we typically operate under power on one engine at 2,200 RPM providing a true 6 knots helped by her folding props. With both engines, cruise is 8+ knots at 2 gph. This gives the boat an incredible range of better than 1,300 nautical miles including reserves.
She is set up with 6 solar panels, wind and hydro generators supplementing the alternators and a Northern lights generator. The house bank is built with deep cycle AGM batteries which has been more than adequate for our usage (new 2023). Over the last year I saw a post on the Facebook 450F owners group showing a salon seating upgrade that extends the seat bottoms by 4 inches and increased depth of the back cushions using high density foam. I got the details from the owner and duplicated this which has made a wonderful upgrade to the salon comfort. It is now the place you want to hang out to read a book or watch a movie. These seats are wide enough to sleep on and when off watch on overnight crossings I often now sleep there so I can be close at hand, but very comfortable.
When anchored, it is very easy to deploy and retrieve the Highfield RIB using the Tenderlift hydraulic dinghy platform. When the dinghy is deployed this also makes for a large extension of the back deck which can also be lowered to be a large swim platform. There is a full enclosure for the Fly Bridge for chilly night watches, and two sets of full enclosures for the cockpit - Sunbrella for winter and mesh for warm times of year. We also have a full shade cover for the front of the boat to be used at anchor making the front entertainment seating area the place to be for sundowners. The water maker is 12 volt (Spectra Catalina 340Z) and we generally run her during the day at anchor while we are generating solar power. We placed the Starlink antennae where the old comsat dish was previously. This works very well and has remained unharmed in bad weather. Given these advances, cell phone has become the favorite means of communication with digital calling on Starlink and weather is fast and easy to retrieve on any of your devices. We also use it to stream movies to the TV and Spotify for music over the three area Fusion audio system connected to the B&G navigation system for remote handling from the flybridge. The Audio system is enhanced with high quality JBL amplifier, six speakers in the Salon / cockpit area and two more at the Flybridge. To protect against any unwanted bad current causing electrolysis from the dock we added a Bridgeport Magnetics isolation transformer back in 2021.
We have a full time licensed Mexican skipper who does all of the maintenance work under my direction. The boat is washed weekly and polished and waxed on a rotating 90 day cycle keeping all looking like new. The bottom is cleaned by a local diver monthly including maintenance of zincs on sail drives. The machinery areas are kept clean and rust free and we stay on top of maintenance schedules. The bulkheads were never broken and the Lagoon service kit installed shortly after the inspection notice.
When I was seaching for this boat I made a number of trips that resulted in total disgust and dissapointment in what was described vs the actual conditions of the boats I looked at. You will not be dissapointed if you come to see this boat. She is as advertised, with just a few things worth mentioning that need attention. First, the main and genoa sails are ready to be replaced. I have quotes in the $12,000 range plus shipping and tax. Second, the port enging alternatior and blower were not functioning and after trying to fix the existing circuit I replaced it with a remote relay that works well.
I think you will find that this boat shows very well given the ongoing care and maintenance she has received.
